About Us

Building Homes...
             Building Hope...
                           With God's People In Need.

Blue Water Habitat for Humanity is a Christian housing ministry serving St. Clair County Michigan since 1990.

Mission Statement
Our mission statement explains why we exist:
Blue Water Habitat for Humanity, in partnership with local families, churches, businesses, organizations and community members, will build, rehabilitate and repair homes in our community to form a stronger community through the elimination of substandard housing in St. Clair County.

How We Do It
Using volunteer labor and donated funds and material, we build and rehabilitate houses to be sold to the needy at no profit and with no interest. We accomplish this by creating a partnership between the affluent and those in need that is ecumenical and nondiscriminatory; a partnership that empowers people and contributes a spirit of genuine community. We work to eliminate substandard housing and make decent housing a matter of conscience in our society.

A Hand Up, Not A Hand Out
Homes are built by forming a partnership with the future homeowner family using primarily volunteer labor. Homeowners meet a threefold criteria of:

  • There must be a need for decent housing.
  • Income between 50% and 25% of the median income for St. Clair County adjusted for family size.
  • Willingness to partner with us by working a minimum of 300 hours per adult member of the household with us (we call it Sweat Equity).

The completed homes are sold to the pre-selected family at cost using a zero interest mortgage that Blue Water HFH carries. The combination of cost reducing volunteer labor and a zero interest mortgage is what makes the home affordable to very low-income families. Mortgage payments come directly to Blue Water HFH and we recycle the money to build more homes for more families in need, we call the mortgage money a revolving fund for humanity.

Our Vision
Blue Water Habitat for Humanity, with the help of God and community, will eliminate substandard housing in St. Clair County, and make decent housing a matter of conscience in our society.

We are pledged to the letter and spirit of U.S. policy for the achievement of equal housing opportunity throughout the nation. We encourage and support an affirmative advertising and marketing program in which there are no barriers to obtaining housing because of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, national origin, age, marital status, or sources of income.
