Blue Water Habitat for Humanity has just completed its first LEED certified home!
The home at 312 Bruce St., Marine City meets the Energy Star standards of our other homes, but we tested out some new energy technology to make it our first LEED home!

What is LEED?
LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, it was developed by the US Green Building Council as an internationally recognized green building certification system.  It provides thrid-party verification that a building or community was designed nad built using strategies aimed at improving performance across the metrics that matter most: energy savings, water efficiency, carbon dioxide emmissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts.

Blue Water Habitat for Humanity is striving for LEED certification on its houses to be good stewards of the land and resources God gave us.  By using more energy efficient standards and being more aware of the resources we're using we can continue to follow the biblical principles Habitat for Humanity was founded on.

It is also important to consider health and economics in our building and rehabilitation of homes.  Striving for the green building guidelines set forth in the LEED certification helps us cut down on the greenhouse gas emissions that are attributed to residential buildings, which consume 21% of energy in the US.  The negative impact of construction and rehabilitation on our environment are great and striving for LEED certification greatly limits that impact and takes into consideration limiting any negative effect.  Economically there is long term savings to the homeowner, and society, when we build energy efficient homes, saving energy resources and the financial resources of the family.

Visit our Construction:Programs page for more information on the energy technology used on the Bruce Street Rehab.
